The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam. Incorporated in 1902 under the laws of the state of South Dakota (as the Sioux Falls and Manitoba Railway Company), the company built a railway line from Sioux Falls to Watertown, South Dakota. Having changed its name on 14 December 1903, it operated and improved the existing line. On 31 March 1915, the company defaulted on its bond interest and sinking fund payments (1st mortgage 20-year bond, $850,000: 1907) and went into foreclosure with H.S. Stebbins acting as receiver.
